Club enjoys success at National Schools’ event
Globe Rowing Club had lots to celebrate at the National Schools’ regatta and junior sculling regatta.
Their junior 16 coxless four of Dominic Sullivan, Max Bees, Jake Offiler and Ronnie Richardson won gold, while the junior 15 coxed four of Archie Kirk, Sullivan, Bees, Peter Howard and cox Izzy Kershaw added silver.
The junior 16 girls’ coxless four of Meda Laukyte, Julia Olawumi, Siobhan Samuel and Fiona McIntosh completed the Natiinal Schools’ haul with bronze, as Callum Sullivan (sixth), Naomi Doye (27th), Sam Baker and Matt Martinez (16th) competed in the championship singles and pairs events.
The junior sculling regatta produced gold for Dominic Sullivan in the junior 15 boys’ single, silver for Callum Sullivan in the junior 17 event, with Baker in sixth place, and bronze for junior 16 girls’ pair Laukyte and McIntosh.
Richardson (11th) and Samuel (fifth) took part in the junior 16 singles, while Olawumi and Chelsea Fashina were seventh in the pairs and Archie Kirk and Peter Howard were fourth in the junior 15 pairs.
“It has been very satisfying and rewarding to be surrounded by such a positive squad,” said head coach Maurice Coughlan.
“Their hard work and dedication throughout winter training has paid off, and the results from these races show this.
“The season has only really just begun and already we have bettered last season’s results. The overall performance is very, very promising with everyone placed well at the top of the draw.”
Globe Rowing Club went into partnership with non-profit organisation London Youth Rowing in 2008 to support junior rowers.
Made up of members from Havering, Newham, Redbridge and Tower Hamlets, as well as others from south of the river, the club has made excellent progress on the waters in recent times, with Callum Sullivan invited to final trials by the GB selectors ahead of the Coup de la Jeunesse in Poznan and Junior World Championships in Rotterdam.
Coughlan added: “We have come a long way since our first athlete simply qualified for the semi-finals in 2011.
“Through the recruitment and development programmes set out by London Youth Rowing, we have developed the squad into what it is today and have shown that we can compete with the best, and beat them.
“Thanks go to London Youth Rowing for being the driving force behind believing Globe RC had the potential to be a competitive junior rowing club.
“I want to thank all members of the squad for their efforts and dedication to training and the results achieved, in spite of the difficulties presented by the number of exams during preparation for this event.
“I also want to thank those who supported me in preparation for this event, in particular Charlotte, Isobel, Matt and Helen who gave up their holiday over Easter and worked around the clock to help run the training camp at Henley.
“The regular support I get at weekends with the safety boat crowd Graham and Ian and coaching from Penelope, Richard and Tony, who give up their time to help squad development.
“And I want wholeheartedly to thank Marion. As with all squads there are those that work tirelessly in thge background giving up countless hours organising, preparing for future events, entries into regattas. Without this support none of what we have achieved would be possible.”
