Transport chiefs are consulting motorists on plans to build a multi-million pound road bridge or tunnel at Gallions Reach.
The new Thames crossing would improve access to Barking and take pressure off the Woolwich Ferry and Blackwall Tunnel in Greenwich.
Proposals also include building an additional crossing next to the Blackwall Tunnel, namely the Silvertown Tunnel, to further cut drivers’ journeys in east London.
Transport for London is also looking at modernising the Woolwich Ferry and launching a new ferry link at Gallions Reach, which would be cheaper and faster to deliver than a bridge or tunnel.
London Mayor Boris Johnson said: “Improving the river crossings in the south and south east part of the Thames has the potential to provide huge support for jobs and growth in east and south London. I would encourage as many people as possible to take part in this consultation and help shape this vital work.”
The consultation exercise ends on February 1. For more information, log on to tfl.gov.uk/rivercrossings.
