Death Notice

Baroness Margaret Thatcher

Published on 08/04/2013

Baroness Margaret Thatcher
Baroness Thatcher died Monday at the age of 87 after suffering a stroke. She was the first woman elected to lead a major western power; the longest serving British prime minister for 150 years; the most dominant, divisive force in British politics in the second half of the 20th century. Margaret Thatcher was known as the Iron Lady and came to redefine British politics during her 11 years as Conservative prime minister. Mrs Thatcher’s leadership was controversial as it was history-making. She triumphed by winning the Falklands War in 1982, privatised loss-making state industries and defeated the once-powerful trade unions and was accused of single-handedly destroying Britain’s coal-mining industry. • Margaret Hilda Thatcher, Lady Thatcher, politician, born 13 October 1925; died 8 April 2013
