Dudley Moore, Sir Alf Ramsey and the Dagenham Ford strikers have been nominated for commemorative plaques at an historic estate.

Famous figures from TV, music and sport are among those whose names have been put forward for plaques due to appear across the Becontree estate as it marks its 100th year.

The organisers - Create London and Barking and Dagenham Council - are calling on the public to nominate anyone who deserves recognition.

Kirsty Kerr, assistant curator at Create London, said: "I've thoroughly enjoyed meeting and talking to a wide range of Becontree residents and groups as part of this process, as well as hearing about the significant roles residents have played in the life and history of the estate.

"We hope to capture any people we may have missed through this nomination process."

The aim is for the plaques to celebrate people who have made a difference to the community.

This includes not just well-known characters, but inspirational people who have played a part in the history of the estate which was built to provide homes for heroes returning from the First World War.

The organisers have completed the first round of nominees. These include the film star, jazz musician and comedian Dudley Moore.

Also nominated are Sir Alf Ramsey, manager of England's 1966 World Cup winning squad, and sisters Muriel and Doris Lester, who in 1929 founded Kingsley Hall.

The Queen's former official dressmaker Sir Hardy Amies, the Ford women strikers and Dagenham Girl Pipers are also among those nominated.

The organisers have invited more nominations, urging our readers to name who they would like to see commemorated with a Becontree plaque.

All they want to know is who your Becontree hero of past or present is and why; who has made a positive impact on the estate and who isn’t celebrated enough.

Artist Leonor Antunes has been tasked with designing the plaques. Nominations will close at midnight on Wednesday, April 7.
